TV catches up with Portage

WJAC-TV started its look at area football teams with a visit to perennial WestPAC power Portage on Monday afternoon.

Here’s a look at the Mustangs, who will be heavy favorites to earn another trip to the District 6 championship  game this season.

Somerset baseball can’t repeat in title tilt

The Golden Eagles booted the ball around and couldn’t make up for it at the plate as Bellefonte scored a 7-4 victory on Thursday.

According to a story in The Tribune-Democrat, Somerset had seven errors and the loss ended the season.

Meyersdale tops Portage for baseball title

Matt Donaldson’s 14 strikeout performance was more than enough for the Red Raiders, who beat Portage for the WestPAC baseball championship, 1-0, on Tuesday.

Donaldson had the team’s lone run as well, scoring in the third inning on a James Baer ground ball. More…

Berlin softball falls short to Portage

WestPAC South champion Berlin came up on the losing end of the conference title game against Portage on Tuesday at V.E. Erickson Field.

Berlin freshman pitcher Megan DeMartion had a solid effort on the mound, striking out six while allowing seven hits in a 4-1 defeat to the Lady Mustangs, which won the conference title two years ago. More…

Penn Cambria sophomore Evan Link earned his spot in the championship, but came up just a bit short in a bid for a title at the National High School Sophomore Wrestling Championships in Virginia Beach, Va.

Portage’s Perich leads area contingent

Portage junior Shawn Perich led a host of area wrestlers during Day 1 of the National High School Wrestling Tournament in Virginia Beach, Va., according to the Altoona Mirror.

Perich won his only Day 1 bout while Penn Cambria had four wrestlers win their only bouts of the day. More…

Taking a peek at softball

The Altoona Mirror has weighed in with its softball capsules. Most of the teams are from District 6, but there’s also a few from District 5 in Bedford County.

It’s certainly worth a read when you’ve got time. Of course, of all the teams, the LHAC’s Bishop Guilfoyle might be the one to watch, so perhaps some of the WestPAC can breathe a little easier for now!

Fisher ready to build at Conemaugh Valley

Jim Fisher knows the challenges that lay ahead as football coach at Conemaugh Valley High School and he’s embracing them.

Fisher, a 38-year-old Vinco resident, was named the successor to Tom Marshall, who resigned following the 2008 Blue Jays campaign.

That opened the door for the 1988 Portage graduate and 1992 graduate of Pitt-Johnstown. More…
