Somerset native makes it pro

Not too long ago, QZ93 Sports went by a different name: CDM Sports. The “M” in that name stood for Bob McElligott, who helped form the network alongside Jack Dickey and the late Nathan Codispoti.

Now it is a pleasure to see that Bob continues to advance in his career, moving up from Syracuse of the AHL to join the broadcast team for Columbus in the NHL. More…

Junior hockey team holds presser to announce franchise

We told you about the United Junior Hockey League’s plan to put a franchise in Johnstown back on April 6. It was finally announced officially on Thursday.

Somerset hockey raising some funds

The Somerset hockey team is raffling off an autographed, authentic Marc-Andre Fleury jersey and a Johnstown Chiefs hockey stick to help raise money for ice time at Planet Ice in Richland.

The jersey of the Penguins goalie and the signed Chiefs goalie stick will be raffled off on May 25 and 24, respectively. To purchase tickets, see any Golden Eagles hockey player before May 15. More…

Christian Hanson, the son of former Johnstown Jet Dave Hanson, scored his first NHL goal on Tuesday, scoring over none other than NHL all-time wins leader Martin Brodeur of the New Jersey Devils. More…

Hockey league adds team in J-Town

The United Junior Hockey League has apparently added a franchise in Johnstown to start play in the 2009-2010 season.

Olympian to make stop at Chiefs game

Don’t miss a chance Sunday to visit with United States Olympian Sam Sacksen, who will be at the Johnstown Chiefs game signing autographs before the 2:35 faceoff with Elmira.

Sacksen finished 18th in the modern pentathalon during the Beijing Olympics, the best of any American. He’s a 2004 graduate of Rockwood High School, and wrote a great series of articles for local newspapers during his time in China.

Bishop McCort headed to Penguin Cup final

The Bishop McCort Crimson Crushers hockey team has had a ongoing battle with Serra Catholic.

But Thursday? That was no battle.

The Crushers exploded for three goals in a little more than a minute of the third period and cruised from there, topping the Eagles 9-3 in a Class A Penguin Cup semifinal game at Mellon Arena. More…
