A sad passing

The Seidel family has the deepest sympathies from all of us at QZ93 Sports on the passing of former Bishop McCort star and assistant coach Dave Seidel. He was 45 and had battled cancer for seven years.

The region was well represented in the first round of the PIAA baseball and softball championships.

The Bishop McCort and North Star baseball teams, as well as the Northern Cambria softball team all moved on with victories Monday afternoon. Unfortunately, Chestnut Ridge softball was knocked off, keeping the day from being a total success. More…

You read about Berlin sophomore Alex Will a few days ago, so it’s good to know he tied for eighth at the PIAA championships as a first-year high jumper!

Congrats, Alex!

Of course, there were a ton of other local athletes that fared well on Saturday, including Bishop McCort’s Jim Spisak, the runner-up in the 1,600-meter run.

United senior earns third in boys javelin

Tyler Capitosti fell short of his qualifying standard and finished third in the javelin at this year’s PIAA championships after a toss of 185 feet on Friday. He had qualified at 204 feet.

Berlin finished on the outside looking in in the 4×800-meter relay preliminaries, so there will be no trip to the finals for the Mountaineers. Meanwhile, Bishop McCort senior Jim Spisak won his heat of the 1,600 and will race in the finals today.

Somerset baseball can’t repeat in title tilt

The Golden Eagles booted the ball around and couldn’t make up for it at the plate as Bellefonte scored a 7-4 victory on Thursday.

According to a story in The Tribune-Democrat, Somerset had seven errors and the loss ended the season.

As you’ve read about before in this space, Bishop McCort graduate Andrew Hawkins is ready to make his reality TV debut on the Spike Network on May 18 at 10 p.m.

The former Toledo wide receiver and defensive back is one of the contestants on Michael Irvin’s “4th and Long,” giving former football stars a chance to make the training camp roster of the Dallas Cowboys. More…

Andrew Hawkins is one of a dozen cast members on Michael Irvin’s Spike TV reality show 4th and Long, with a chance at making the Dallas Cowboys.

Pitt’s Blue-Gold game gives area players the spotlight

The Pitt Panthers football team has a host of local talent on its roster and some of those guys figured prominently in Saturday’s Blue-Gold game.

Richland graduate Marco Pecora intercepted a pass for the Pitt defense, which routed the offense. Greater Johnstown grauduate Antwuan Reed also factored in the scoring, though not for the reason he wanted. More…
