Daily American gives us a complete rundown of previews

Mountaineers raise the attention of TV

The Berlin Mountaineers, one of two teams you’ll hear about on Friday night in the QZ93 Sports season opener, was featured on WJAC-TV’s “Two-A-Days” on Sunday. Berlin takes on North Star as two of the teams expected to be near the top this year face off.

Congratulations to the Conemaugh Township Indians, the District 5 Class A champions after a thrilling victory over Windber on Friday night!

We told you it was going to be a good one, and we weren’t wrong. It came down to Scott Thomas’ field goal in the waning seconds to give the Indians the title, 21-20.

Be sure to keep an eye on this page, as we let you know about any future broadcasts involving the Indians, who get a week off before facing the District 7 (WPIAL) champion.

PIAA boys championship: Day 2

You read about Berlin sophomore Alex Will a few days ago, so it’s good to know he tied for eighth at the PIAA championships as a first-year high jumper!

Congrats, Alex!

Of course, there were a ton of other local athletes that fared well on Saturday, including Bishop McCort’s Jim Spisak, the runner-up in the 1,600-meter run.

United senior earns third in boys javelin

In Berlin, Bishop McCort, District 5, District 6, LHAC, PIAA, Track and Field, United on May 23, 2009 at 8:16 am

Tyler Capitosti fell short of his qualifying standard and finished third in the javelin at this year’s PIAA championships after a toss of 185 feet on Friday. He had qualified at 204 feet.

Berlin finished on the outside looking in in the 4×800-meter relay preliminaries, so there will be no trip to the finals for the Mountaineers. Meanwhile, Bishop McCort senior Jim Spisak won his heat of the 1,600 and will race in the finals today.

Berlin sophomore ready to break through

At 6-foot-6, Berlin sophomore Alex Will stands out. But this isn’t about standing out because he’s tall, it’s about standing out because, in this day and age, Alex Will is something special.

As if it wasn’t enough to be a star football and basketball player, Will is also a star baseball player and will compete this weekend in the high jump at the PIAA championships.

As if being a four-sport star isn’t hard enough, Will’s got another thing going for him.

You see, he’s also a sensational student, carrying a GPA near 4.6 and ranking him among the top 2 in his class.

Berlin scores major victory

The Berlin Lady Mountaineers scored one of the biggest wins in program history on Wednesday, topping Meyersdale 10-0 in five innings for the program’s first playoff victory.

Hayley Shealer’s accomplishments throughout her volleyball and track and field career are lengthy.

All-WestPAC first team volleyball this year. Third-place in District 5 as part of a 4×100-meter relay team. Second on the East Coast during a Junior Olympics javelin competition. Part of multiple WestPAC champion track teams and starter on a two-time WestPAC runner-up volleyball team.

But what most people don’t know about the Berlin Brothersvalley senior is that she also has a lengthy list of a more troublesome variety.

The Bedford boys and girls teams each earned district championships on Wednesday at Northern Bedford, according to The Tribune-Democrat.
