Shanksville hoopster doing some good

A warm thank you this morning to Shanksville’s Steve Keller, who’s organizing a charity basketball tournament to benefit the Susan B. Komen for the Cure Foundation.

The Daily American has the article on Keller, who is getting the tournament together for his senior project.

Here’s to wishing the best to Keller and his efforts! It’s a pleasure to have such students in our midst.

Berlin sophomore ready to break through

At 6-foot-6, Berlin sophomore Alex Will stands out. But this isn’t about standing out because he’s tall, it’s about standing out because, in this day and age, Alex Will is something special.

As if it wasn’t enough to be a star football and basketball player, Will is also a star baseball player and will compete this weekend in the high jump at the PIAA championships.

As if being a four-sport star isn’t hard enough, Will’s got another thing going for him.

You see, he’s also a sensational student, carrying a GPA near 4.6 and ranking him among the top 2 in his class.

Shubik shooting for successful first camp

Former North Star great Drew Shubik is headed back to the area to conduct a basketball camp in Kantner in June.

According to information in The Daily American, Shubik’s camp will be for players grade 3 and up, and will run from June 8-12 from 1 p.m.-4 p.m. More…

Report: Hershey sweetens PIAA pot

The battle is on for the PIAA basketball championships.

According to the Harrisburg Patriot-News, Hershey Entertainment and Resorts offered a proposal to the PIAA that would not cost the organization anything other than catering costs to hold its basketball championships at the Giant Center. More…

All-County hoops stars honored

The curtain officially closed on the 2009 basketball season as QZ93 Sports handed out the hardware to the boys All-Somerset County basketball team on Wednesday night during a banquet at Hoss’s Steak and Sea House in Somerset.

WestPAC lands two on All-State team

The Associated Press’ All-State girls basketball team has two juniors from WestPAC schools on its second-team.

Conemaugh Valley’s Taylor Gruss and Ferndale’s Brittany Eisenhuth each were named to the Class A second-team as four players from The Tribune-Democrat’s coverage area were selected. More…

Miller hoops his way to AP team

Central Cambria senior Jordan Miller was honored by his community a few weeks ago with his own week. Now, he’s part of the Class AA first team for the state of Pennsylvania.

The basketball star, who will  go to Pitt-Johnstown next year to play for coach Bob Rukavina, averaged better than 30 points per game this season. More…

Area pair lead Mountain Cat AAU team

Shade’s Kenny Gibbons and North Star’s Jacob Fleegle shined for the Mountain Cat Basketball Boys’ 16-under AAU team during a trip to a Pittsburgh tournament, according to The Daily American.

The team went 3-0 at the Pittsburgh Tip-Off Tournament held at Robert Morris University. More…

Showcase’s second go-round happens today

The Tribune-Democrat started the Senior Hoops Showcase a year ago to highlight some of the top senior basketball players in the area.

The event’s second year is this afternoon with a girls game tipoff at 3 p.m. and the boys at 5 p.m. at UPJ’s Sports Center. More…
