WPIAL wrestling with PIAA choice

In District 5, Football, PIAA on May 17, 2009 at 11:41 am

Thursday morning is going to be a very big morning. In the WPIAL (District 7) it could be a monumental morning.

Thursday morning the PIAA votes on whether or not to expand the current four classification football structure into a six class structure. The WPIAL has been among the most vocal about the change, insisting that it may go so far as to withdraw from the PIAA playoffs altogether.

The Tribune-Review has a breakdown of the WPIAL teams, and where they would go if the change is implemented. I put together a list of local teams and which classes I felt they would go in based on my math.

“When we took the survey, 92 percent of the schools present were against the six classifications,” WPIAL Executive Director Tim O’Malley told The Tribune-Review. “When asked if they were OK if we ended the season after the WPIAL championships, 75 percent approved.

“Playing state championship games in late December is not good. We’re cutting into two weeks of our winter-sport season.”

Without the WPIAL in a six class football playoffs, could it mean better things for District 5, which has had to face perennial state finalists in its quarterfinal games?

That’s to be determined, I guess.
