District 5 track titles dominated by Bedford

The Bedford boys and girls teams each earned district championships on Wednesday at Northern Bedford, according to The Tribune-Democrat.

There were plenty of highlights on both the boys and girls side, but especially the girls, as one Conemaugh Township pole vaulter soared to new heights.

The Bisons boys scored 145 points, easily outdistancing Berlin’s 90 points. Everett (82 points) was third and Windber (42) was fourth.

Berlin’s 3200-meter relay team finished first in 8:31.7 while Conemaugh Township’s Steve Ketner improved by 30 seconds on his seeding time with a victory in the 3200-meter run (10:31.19)

The Bedford girls scored 104 points, edging host Northern Bedford (96). Windber, with 61 points, was third.

Conemaugh Township’s Kelly Vann turned in one of the day’s most impressive performances, bettering her previous high of 9 feet, 7 inches in the pole vault. On Wednesday, she went 11 feet, grabbing a new meet record from former Berlin standout Anna Samole, who had gone 10-6.

Shade’s Chloe Mapes won the high jump (5-2) and was the anchor on the Lady Panthers’ winning 400-meter relay team, which turned in a time of 51.82. Mapes was also part of the victorious 1600-meter relay team (4:13.45).

Windber’s Sarah Snyder won the 300 hurdles (47.66 seconds) and teammate Sarah Bibby won the 800-meter run (2:28.45).
