Valko’s debut in freestyle a good one

Pitt-Johnstown’s Shane Valko was looking for a national championship during this past season at the NCAA Divison II wrestling championships, but came up short in his bid.

So the Forest Hills graduate is doing everything he can this summer to prepare to bring a national title back to the Richland campus. That even includes wrestling freestyle for the first time, according to a story in today’s Tribune-Democrat.

Valko has been learning the art of freestyle under the tutelage of UPJ assistant coach Jody Strittmatter and finished seventh at a tournament in Akron, Ohio, this weekend.

“I beat some Division I studs. It just keeps adding fuel to my fire,” Valko said.

Valko’s not just a great wrestler, but is also very active in the community. We with him all the best this summer and during his battles next season!
