The curtain officially closed on the 2009 basketball season as QZ93 Sports handed out the hardware to the boys All-Somerset County basketball team on Wednesday night during a banquet at Hoss’s Steak and Sea House in Somerset.

Taking top honors on the evening were Shade coach Wade Fyock and guard Joel Kaminsky. Fyock took home county coach of the year honors for the second straight season and

Kaminsky was named the county’s outstanding senior. Voting for the awards was done by QZ93 Sports broadcasters as well as the coaches in Somerset County.

Joining Kaminsky on the first team was Shade teammate Garrett Berkey, Rockwood’s Riley Harrold and North Star’s duo of Luke Zellem and Alijah Petrilla.

The second team was comprised of Shanksville’s Mike Abramowich and Shane Speicher, Shade’s Josh Barnes, Conemaugh Township’s Matt Duray and Berlin sophomore Alex Will, the only non-senior of the bunch.

“It’s an honor to win the outstanding senior award,” Kaminsky said. “I came in here expecting anybody to be able to get that award. Everyone played incredible for their teams. It’s an honor, but the most memorable thing is being able to do the things that we did this season.”

Shade, led by the trio of Kaminsky, Barnes and Berkey, as well as fellow senior Brandon Kudasik, took the Panthers to WestPAC and District 5 titles before falling in the state quarterfinals to Serra Catholic.

“It’s always an honor to be selected by your peers,” Fyock said. “It never gets old. Obviously, the individual accomplishments and recognition that the players earned as all-county players and as the coach of the year, it’s a result of a pretty good basketball season and we are proud of that.”

With only one of this year’s All-County members returning next season, there will be plenty of new athletes ready to fill pretty big shoes. Like each of the coaches losing experienced starts to graduation, Fyock hopes his players were able to learn from the seniors he had on the roster.

“The senior group led by example, with countless hours in the weight room, summer leagues and shootouts and team camp,” Fyock said. “There’s the expectation that we are going to work hard and, thankfully, we had a group of kids that bought into it and hopefully they will have an influence on the younger guys coming all the way through the program.”

Kaminsky was one of six players on the all-county team that has scored 1,000 points. He took a moment after the festivities to reflect on the completed season.

“It was awesome,” Kaminsky said. “That’s what we expected going into the season and we did it. And coming back from last year, getting into all the championship games and not coming out with a victory, getting to have a second chance and getting it done, was amazing.”

Honorable mention players included Berlin’s Brandon Leydig and Scott Gindlesperger; Conemaugh Township’s Kyle Smiach and Matt Jones; Meyersdale’s Tyler Sechler; North Star’s Tyler Zborovancik and Jacob Fleegle; Rockwood’s Andrew Miller and Nick Foreman; Salisbury’s Warren Beitzel and Dani Lung; Shade’s Brandon Kudasik, Tyler Smith and Kenny Gibbons; Shanksville’s Silas Miller and Carter Lehman; Turkeyfoot Valley’s Dylan Schartiger; and, Windber’s Mike Clark and Cameron Ursino.

The Daily American also covered the banquet, and you can read that story here.
