Pitt suspensions good and bad for area players

Reports from Pittsburgh are that the Pitt Panthers football team suspended three players for the duration of spring drills, which finish on Saturday with the annual Blue-Gold game.

On the bad side, one of the suspended players is reportedly Bishop McCort grad Wayne Jones. But another suspension could be a good chance for Johnstown graduate Antwuan Reed.

The reports state that Pitt did not identify the reason for the suspensions, other than unrelated “violations of team policy.” The other players suspended were senior cornerback Aaron Barry and senior defensive tackle Tommie Duhart. Jones, a sophomore, is an offensive lineman.

The suspensions are reportedly going to last through the Blue-Gold game, so that should give Reed a chance to shine. He was listed as Berry’s backup in a story published earlier this spring in The Tribune-Democrat.

With Berry out of action, Reed should see even more time, giving the star another chance to impress coaches. As if he hasn’t done that already, though. He did lose his redshirt when Pitt put him on the field as a true freshman against Southern Florida in a nationally televised Thursday night game last season.

Let’s hope Jones learned his lesson and can put this behind him and that Reed can take advantage of a good opportunity earned in a not-so-great way.
