Strayer wins first two at NCAA championships

Former Forest Hills wrestling standout Jake Strayer went 2-0 on Day 1 at the NCAA Division I championships in St. Louis.

Penn State’s Strayer will face the tournament’s No. 2 seed, Reece Humphrey of Ohio State, in Friday morning’s quarterfinal round.

The No. 10 seed Strayer knocked off Edinboro’s Ricky Deubel 7-2 in the first round at 133 pounds, then topped Iowa State’s Nick Fanthorpe, the No. 7 seed, 7-3 in the second round. Strayer escaped Fanthorpe in the third overtime for a 4-3 lead, then turned the Hawkeye for three nearfall points in the overtime session for the final margin.
