Valko a runner-up at nationals; Whetstone finishes fifth

In Claysburg, College Sports, District 6, Forest Hills, Pitt-Johnstown, Wrestling on March 14, 2009 at 8:35 pm

Forest Hills graduate Shane Valko fell 2-1 in overtime against Kutztown’s Joe Kammerer and finished second in the nation at the NCAA Division II national wrestling championships. Pitt-Johnstown’s Valko, who beat Kammerer for the East Region crown in overtime two weeks ago, gave up an escape in the first tie-breaker period and was ridden out in the second.

Only a junior, Valko’s still got more time ahead to prove he’s the best in the country. Congratulations on a strong season and an All-American finish!

Valko’s teammate, Claysburg-Kimmel graduate Adam Whetstone, also earned All-American status by finishing fifth. Whetstone had advanced to the semifinals at 141 pounds, but lost back-to-back matches before beating Ben Lockett in the consolation finals. Congrats to Whetstone, who is also only a junior!
